Malevolent March: Day 13

For the month of March, I'm going to try something new for the blog, so every day I am going to spotlight a different villain from comic books, movies, TV, etc. It's mostly going to be my all-time favorite villains, with some crazy random ones thrown in there for good measure, so check back every day to see the newest villain in Malevolent March!

There are often times when the same villain will show up either in different films (like Hannibal Lecter, Jack the Ripper, etc.) or across different mediums (like vampires who are in books, televison, movies, comic books, etc). But there is one villain who appears in every medium and sooner or later rears it's ugly head to ruin the lives of our protagonists. Who is it? Who could be one of the worst villains in every medium? Who?! I'll tell you who. Hit the jump.

SOCIETY

That's right. And I don't mean like the Secret Society of Super-villains. I mean you and me. I mean an abstraction of a collection of relationships between individuals, usually including distinctive cultural, economic, or political properties and vary greatly in complexity and scope. Today's villain is indeed Society. Think about it: whether it's two star-crossed lovers that can't be together, Swayze wanting to teach an underage girl the beauty of sexy dancing, or Jackie Earl Hayley wanting to jack off on a first date; Society is always there to get in their way. It's the reason why the rich girl can't dance with the handsome kid from the wrong side of the tracks. It's the reason that Mr. Darcy can't be with Elizabeth Bennet, or why Jane Eyre can't be with that dude that keeps his wife chained up in his house (whoops, spoiler alert). Granted, sooner or later they overcome these problems, but you could say that about every villain this month. None of them are ruling the world and doing whatever they want to. But Society is. Sure there's a couple times when the underprivaledged kids band together as one and learn life lessons and defeat the big rich white school in baseball/hockey/karate, but those instances are few and far in between. Society wins most of the time! And it must be stopped! Fuck you Society!!

  1. Whoa! Didn't see this one coming. Society may possibly be the ultimate bad guy. (And the scariest).
